2006 Is 350

i have a close relative that is thinking about buying a 2006 IS 350 so i want to see if hes making the right choice.

about how many miles do they last?

are they reliable? any usual problems?

is it rwd like bmw 3 series, and would the 3 series or IS 350 have better handling and faster?

are there any other cars that are better then IS 350 that are a mid sized sedan like IS 350?

I would imagine the IS lasting as long as any Toyota... forever. lol. But seriously, the transmission might go about 150000-170000 miles. Not sure though, hard to predict. No problems that I've heard of.
I think some have said that the BMW is more of a "sport" oriented sedan. While the Lexus is almost on par with the performance aspect while managing a much higher feeling of quality and luxury. I thought that the IS 350 was actually faster than the BMW, not sure though, so don't quote me on that.
The BMW is a nice car, don't get me wrong, but reliability will deffinitely not be as good as on the Lexus. BMW's are notorious for electical problems, that's pretty much they're weekest point. They have other short comings too. If I were you, I'd take a look in a Consumer Reports or another credible recource for information.
Good luck, Will

follow the regular maintenance schedule called for by Lexus and it will last well past its warranty.

YES, most definitely. no, cars are built by human beings and are thus prone to error.

the is350 is RWD only. the 3 series should handle better, but the IS350 is faster.

mb, bmw, infiniti, acura are just some of the manufacturers that offer comparable vehicles. But, as an owner of an IS350 with luxuary package, it is one of the best vehicles i have ever owned.

You are saying this base on a problem with the IS350 transmission?

If you're keeping it for 4 years, either one is fine. After 4 years, go with the IS cause the bill for the 3 Series will make you cry.

The engine is brand spanking new to the toyota line up so there isn't much history before it yet. History meaning - tendencies, longevity, durability, etc. However, Toyota engines are known for their durability and known for maintaining their power for quite some time so i wouldn't worry about it too much. I think the IS350 is an awesome vehicle.

As for the transmission, just keep it maintained regularly. And understand that transmissions weren't built to last as long as the engine. However, the transmission will probably last you as long as you keep the car.
