LEXUS ES 250 gasket relpacement

I have a 1991 lexus es 250. I went to a mechanic because my car was overheating and runnin real rough high idle. He said that I needed a new head gasket because water was being sucked into the engine. What should I look for and expect to have replacement and any estimated cost. I just don't want to get ripped off.

If it's just the cylinder head gasket then it's mostly labour. However, you will need to check the cylinder head for cracks and warpage before installation. Flush the cooling system and replace the engine oil and filter and you should be good to go. Don't forget to check the condition of your cooling system, rad, cap, hoses etc just incase they were the cause of the cylinder head blowing its gasket.

Thanks for the info. The mechanic says he will have to take the head to the machine shop and that the part is pretty expensive. Anybody know where I can get a head gasket set pretty cheap?
