What do you guys think about the IS250?
Did toyota just totally gave up on manual gear boxes?
Does anyone know if it's running the same gear box as IS300? No change at all?
I mean, worse fuel efficiency compare to an automatic, and slower 0-60?
0-60 in 7.8 for manual? That's... well, camry accel
I have a feeling that the next Supra would be offered with manual for weaker engine and automatic only for the higher end.
Lexus underrated the performance of the IS250 with 6 speed. It is much quicker than just a 7.8 sec 0-60. It is a pretty quick car because of the very aggressive gear ratios and much faster than the auto version of IS250. Recently, a road test done (head to head comparo with 325i) and the IS250 pulled a 7.1 sec 0-60 and 15.4 sec quartermile, which makes it even with the first generation lighter and smaller 5 speed manual IS300. Plus, they now have good aftermarket support available with intakes, exhausts etc. that will add more power and make it quicker.
p.s. IS300 had 5 speed while IS250 has a close-ratio 6 speed.
IS250 + 6 speed manual + sport package. The total package and pure fun.

nice, nice. I guess Toyota was just trying to discourage manual buyers then. Or they are just trying to sell more of their automatics ( which is actually decent, I wouldn't buy one though )
The new Camry has the 3.5 L ( I believe it's the same as the is350 but tuned differently ) and puts out 268HP, and a claimed fuel efficiency of slightly better than the Is250 with 68 HP less.
I'm just expecting a sports sedan to do somewhat better than a family mover, even at entry level. ( I drive a camry now by the way, love it, but it just doesn't handle and the gears are way too spaced out )
If they just put a manual on that 3.5 L, it's gonna be a beast. ( or at least seems more sporty, I have to say the new toyota automatic tranmission is impressive )
We are seriously going to look at a IS250 in a couple of years. I want to keep the 07 Camry in good shape to sell off and throw the cash at the IS250.
We will get the manumatic tranny because Mrs Dood will not learn to drive a stick. Oh..well...no big deal...it will still be quick enough for the road. Not like we are going to street race the thing.

Too bad it doesn't come with a 6-speed to handle all of 268hp.
Regarding the IS250 performance feel... don't expect stellar jaw dropping acceleration. The performance is all in the 350. With a meer 204-hp mated with a 6-speed. If (like you mentioned above) performance you're looking for, don't expect too much from 185lbs of torque on a luxury car. Several more thousands, you can get your self a 350
Specs on the IS250 are : (lexus.com)
2.5-liter
204-hp V6 with 185 lb-ft of torque
Base price:
$30,580 (lexus.com)
For a few extra thousand, 350 FTW Totally worth it for all the equipment you get on her.
NOte: Ugh, I love HID... and they listed it as "optional equipment." Jeez... Luxury cars should just have it stock.
toyota has kinda given up on sticks which is kinda sad, especially considering the 3-series has a stick on most models, and dealing with the Camry, the Accord and Altima feature V6 models with 6 speed manuals, and the Camry should too, as well as the beastly IS350
interestingly they offer sticks on Scions, corolla, matrix, 4 cyl Camry's and Solaras, Tacoma, V6 Tundra, RAV4 4 cyl, and the FJ and Yaris
the mpg being higher on a Toyota auto is nothing new, the 7th gen Celica GT got worse EPA numbers with the stick, which is odd considering most sticks get better EPA mpg numbers
btw, the Camry does in a way share the V6 with the IS350, ES350, RAV4, and Avalon. and probably the Highlander, RX, Solara, and Sienna in the future. the IS350's motor is the 2GR-FSE, though, featuring direct injection, in every other car mentioned it is the 2GR-FE, and the IS gets RWD vs. FWD or 4WD on everything else mentioned. The JDM GS and Crown Athlete also have the 2GR-FSE.
I believe that the new GS450h uses a version of the 2GR as well (2GR-FSXE?) with the HSD
The IS250 uses the 4GR-FSE, same family, smaller displacement, still direct injection

True. and sad. From what I heard on this forum before the GEN 2 solara's were available, they stopped manuals for V-6's. Reason being: Manual V6's sat in the lot for a long long time before it was even sold compared to an auto.
The IS350 paddle shifter technology is very good from what I hear. Shifts are instant, and from what I also heard, power is no where short of fun.
Reality is quite the opposite. I have seen many clublexus.com owners complaining that the auto transmission in sport mode is very slow shifts. There is a distinct 1 second pause between shifts. It is still a slushbox like any other auto.
Even if it were quick in shifting, it does not take away from the fact that automatics suck power and have 20% powertrain loss, will have a mind of it's own and refuse to downshift or upshift on it's own.

.
That sucks. I watched the review of the 350 on Speed Channel on Demand. (Still there for timewarner customers) and from the review, many were positive. Darn... I would have think they did something spectacular with the paddles... instead of re-wriring the old skool auto-stick shift into the steering column and putting on paddle sensor on. Darn... Cool feature though.
