stereo replacement

I've got a 94 ES300 and the stereo is starting to go. Sounds terrible until it warms up and seems to be getting worse quickly. Ideally I'd like to put in a more modern Toyota/Lexus OEM stereo with a CD player or one of those Toyota in-dash CD changers I see on eBay.

Anyone have experience with swapping factory stereos in or out? I'm nervous because the stereo is not DIN sized, it's that big trapezoidal shape. Interestingly, the new Solara has a very similar looking shape. Wonder if that fits...

Suggestions?

Thanks much.

Anyone know relevant specifications on the Lexus audio system, such as speaker impedence, output level to the amplifier, etc? And are those specs similar to a model year 2000 Camry, a 2002 Corolla, a 2006 Scion, or a newer Toyota anything?

I knew someone who upgraded a Mazda stereo from a 1998 to a 2003. Everything just snapped into place like it was meant to be there except...Mazda had changed from 4 Ohm speakers to 2 Ohm so they drew more current and the head unit had a short life.

if i were u i would start by replacing the speakers. a good place to go for that would be overstock.com which has lots of after market speakers but im sure that they would work with your car
