2000 LX470 "thump" sound when braking

When I brake to a full or near stop in either forward or reverse I hear a "thump" or a deep "click" sound from the front end. Same sound whether I break in gear or neutral. Same sound no matter what the height adjustment or shock adjustment is set to. Sound does not occur with every braking, but almost. Also appears to occur more often, and possibly louder, when braking in forward. Have carefully gone through the brakes and inspected the front end (struts, shocks, etc) to no avail. One front brake pad does have slightly more more wear than the other. Can't figure out where the noise is coming from.

was this just recent or has this been happening for a long time? Often times that sound is just the brake pads shifting within the calipers themselves.

It's been going on for a few months. Took the brakes apart & saw no shifting.
