Is that 415 PS = 408 HP fixed or over? since M3 makes 415 HP from 1 liter less displacement.
Where did you get the English translation from?
There a some sites on the internet where you can do English <-> Japanese translations.
Power is fixed. Figures are for the Japanese model, so expect that they are around 405ps for the North American version. Note that the torque is 100Nm higher then the 4 liter M3 engine. And that this engine will work longer then the M3 engine . Just kidding, BMW engines are some of the most powerfull N/A engines in the world.
Just for the info:
2UR-GSE (IS-F) ---------------------- S65B40 (M3)
4996cc (5.0l) V8 --------------------- 3999cc (4.0l) V8
DOHC + Dual VVT-i ------------------ DOHC +Double VANOS
ETCS-i throttle control --------------- Valvetronic
D-4S direct/indirect injection -------- direct injection
305kW/?rpm ------------------------- 309kW/8300rpm
500Nm/?rpm ------------------------- 400Nm/3900rpm
Euro IV emission levels ------------- Euro IV emission levels

Thanks. I posted this on a lexus website and they are having a hard time believing the HP numbers as they are expecting much more.
BTW, I have been watching and reading European new M3 reviews. It is definitely a fabulous and extremely powerful car.

I also look out for the first IS-F / M3 / C63 AMG comperissons in way of acceleration and handling. Seeing that this is Lexus first attempt to take them on, I don't expect it beeing the best.

Here is a fabulous European video of what IS-F will be pitted against (RS4 and M3). Extremely well edited and put together. These two cars sound incredible.
I'm not sure about those specs but I've seen several of them in person at work. They are beautiful cars. The bulges aren't as pronounced as they are in pictures.

I have a noob question...what do you guys mean by power is fixed or not? Are you guys saying that's the official number?
Its just I've never heard of that.
Thanks!
Please don't flame

It is about the specs being ballpark figures (especially power and torque) or exact numbers. In other words, is it 407 HP flat or the usual "more than" game that Lexus is playing.
I find it amusing how Lexus is staying tight lipped about the HP and torque as if it is going to make or break the car. People spending that much money are not going to buy it on the catch-phrase "most HP in it's class", if even that. I guess, BMW etc. do not have to play that game as they declared all the specifications and 420 HP figures 6 months before release. As a matter of fact, BMW has a history of underrating it's cars for insurance reasons.

Thanks for the explaination!
Yes it is amusing Lexus or even Toyota will be tight lipped about this stuff...But I wonder if its because of the competition, obviously marketing reasons. I think they want to hype it up. Remember how Toyota didn't want the Tundra specs out until GM's trucks were out, something like that. Maybe its to give Lexus some wiggle room and change if they have to but obviously they can't change too much if they are releasing it soon unless they plan to postpone it but the IS-F debut this last January and won't go on sale till Jan 08.

One of the guys' from SGuy ran into one this past weekend....

Seeing the pics from the auto shows and seeing it in real life are two different things. Admittedly, I didn't like the press pics of the car, but seeing it in the flesh, the car is really nice. And of course, it has a very nice, Lexus quality interior. And surprisingly, it's very quiet for a V8 (too bad the guy didn't get on it though).
I honestly still don't think it'll match the new M3, because of Lexus' lack of racing heritage, but it's a step in the right direction.
The M3 makes very little torque compared to the new IS-F
M3
420hp at 8,300 RPM
295lbs. ft. of torque at 3,900 RPM
I'd drop a few hp for the loads of extra torque myself.
Each to his own.
BTW, It is because it does not need tons of torque to be fast (faster than a C6 Corvette base, for example) because it is a European sports car built to deliver power harmoniously with the suspension and not to be a big nose-heavy V8 muscle car:
Wheel torque = total gear ratios (final drive, differential ratio) x crank torque.
M3 comes with a 4.00 stock rear end ratio, thanks to a lofty 8400 rpm redline compared to 2.91 on the Lexus. That is why M3 spins crazily off the line in every video (5th gear?).
Added to that, an exotic car like sound and 8400 rpm redline and 90% of the torque available from 1500 rpm to 8000 rpm, no wonder it has been tested at 4.2 seconds 0-60 and 12.6 secs 1/4 mile by Italian "Auto" magazine.
That is all before we even get into the handling.
