This is my first post in the Lexus forum as I am usually posting in the Acura Legend forum...looks like the same style.
My mom has a 1992 LS 400. She notified me of a few problems it's having. Let me know if these do or don't sound familiar to you.
**She says the sunroof won't work at all. It used to, but now it's no good. The only thing I can think of is that she never hardly used the thing and maybe rust found a 'soft spot'.
**She was chilling at a red light a couple days ago and the idle became rough. She described it as 'almost stalling'. She was scared it would stall in the middle of the intersection so she immediately pulled over into a nearby parking lot. The problem hasn't occured since or before that incident. Her thoughts: 'bad gas'.
**Lastly, there's the recent arrival of the 'key in the ignition' beep. It now does it with the key in and out of the ignition for approx. 30 seconds. It doesn't matter if the driver's door is opened or closed either.
That concluded my first thread in the Lexus forum. I'd appreciate any assistance folks. Have a nice day.
the noise with the key out of the ignition is to say the sunroof is open and and you are leaving the car
get teh roof fixed or put back down as it is in the begining of the tilt up mode. The sunroof does not beep when it is being opened back. Only when it is tilted up. The stalling could be many things, Would need way more info to even start to get an idea.
I'd get the roof track looked at - its like little teeth...maybe some of the teeth are broken..and hence the non-operational roof!
The rough idling could be a lot of things, BUT most importantly, is the CEL on (check engine light) cus' if thats on, then you've got a problem...other than that, i'd say get your head cleaned - could be carbon buildup in the head more than anything else.
I think the key thing was mentioned nicely by the person above..its essentially like an alarm clock beeping to indicate that the roof is open/tilted. Get your roof checked!
Thanks for the help guys. I didn't realize the sunroof being opened could even cause beeping...and I've been a valet for almost 2 years now...haha. That's a nice option, but must not be too popular.
I'm heading home this weekend and will further look into the stalling problem.
Thanks,
HPK

I don't think thats an option, its std on lexus. Nice, i'm a valet parker myself...i've hardly seen this on other vehicles (other than some old bmers).
The rough idle may be bad sparkplug wires. That was the rough idle (miss) problem on my LS400. New plug wires and the engine was smooth as silk again. I agree though- it could be a number of things. If "check engine" light is on -have that checked first. The diagnostic plug is under the left hand side of the instrument panel. It is a gray plug. AutoZone checks cars for free. Good luck.

hey goto the local napa, or advanced auto and pick up "sea-foam" put it in one of the vaccum hoses into the carb. this will clean everything from carbon, if it doesnt help the idle it will help many other things. I do this everytime i do an oil change on my f150..
