i currently drive a turbo'd integra but now i'm in the market for a daily driver car and leave the integra for weekends/track days/shows etc. basically, i need something that some friends can pile into and head downtown and i can park it and not have to worry if it'll still be there at the end of the night. i also need something comfortable and i can drive everyday and thru winter.
so after looking at alot of cars, a friend suggested an 01 model Lexus IS300 which i totaly overlooked. they are going for a decent price around here in toronto, varying from about $12-16,000 which is actually under my budget.
i'm just wondering, what are some things to look out for when buying one? things i should be careful of with higher mileage cars? common problems? also, how are they in winter even with the traction controll? will i be ok with a good set of winter tires? are they decent on gas? (i don't really mind too much on the gas part, my work is two blocks away from my house..lol). insurance rates decent?
one of the best inline motors made is in that lexus is300
i work for a toyota dealership and dont see too much is300 so i cant say whats common defects they have but two co works own one and they seem to have no problems at all
they are really nice cars and i love the feel of the steering.. really sporty

cool, thanks for your imput!
from what i hear, the 5spds have a slight problem with the throw out bearing but either than that aparantly they don't have any re-calls whatso ever. so i guess i can go for one with slightly higher mileage.
A manual transmission option was only offered for cars made in 2002 onwards.
thats right, i'm looking at the 2001,02,03,04 models, whatever i can get for a good price.
question tho, i'm starting up my own photography business shooting weddings and stuff; so i'll be carrying around my equipment, is there ample cargo room in the trunk?
also, if i do get it, i was thinking about lowering it just a bit to get rid of the wheel gap and a nice set of polished wheels, what's a good coilover to go with? tein? TRD? and will 17x8 rims fill the wells nicely? thanks for the help!
I had those popping sounds in my brakes. Those sounds mean your pads are close to worn. I changed all my pads with all OEM parts of course. I havent heard anything since.

Excellent. Ill have to make sure I get the oem ones. Thank You.
I had my is300 for about 4 years now. the only problem I ever had was a oxygen sensor. the is300 has 4. other than that car is solid!!!!
What was the problem exactly with the Oxygen sensor, and how did you got to fix it ? Because my dad is having the same problem with his 01 IS300 and I think his mechanic have changed all the sensors. and it still getting the CEL.
Now his mechanic told my dad that the proble is the catalytic converter. Is there a good place to online order this part. I did a google search and the only place I was able to find it New was in an ebay store and I am not sure if the store is reliable or not. They have a number there so I am going to give the a call.
only 1 of my 02 sensors had to be replaced. and use a OBD scanner to find exactly whhats wrong with your cAR. see what codes its throwing for that CEL.
what a waste of money changing all those 02 sensors. obd scanner would have save u alot of time.
hahahaha...I read that someone changed there brake pads with OEM and the noise disappeared. I did that a while ago, but the noise/clanking is still there. Did you get a rebuilt kit on top of changing your pads?
About the OBD II scanner. Its free to use, if you go to Schucks/Krager/Autozone and use it in there parking lot. Just look under the left side of the driver side dash. There is a connection that you plug it into. Wait a couple of minutes and bam, there is your codes. You would then have to figure out what those codes are. Once you find out what the codes are, you can then fix the problem.
BTW f15Camry, How much did your dad spend on all 4 sensors? I was quoted through Lexus Stealership that my Bank 2; Sensor 1 is $250 uninstalled. Or was it installed?? I dont remember
Car still runs fine and my CEL is still on as well. I do need to get that fixed, so that my MPG can go back up to 20MPG
I have no noise on my oem pads. did u use anti seize to grease behind the pads and shims?
just get the o2 sensors from sparkplugs.com. cost about 100 bucks each and they are oem sensors. then go to sears or checkers and buy the o2 sensor socket. change it while your car is cold or u will get burn. its easy.
