Vacuum Switching Valve for Charcoal Canister

Hello All,

I have a 1998 ES300 and the check engine lights kept coming on. The dealership did a diagnostic and determined that the Vacuum Switching Valve for the charcoal canister needs to be replaced. The part number is 90910-12271. The part costs $102 and they are asking $175 for labour. I have already given them $260 for the diagnostic. Can I buy the part and do it myself? Also, how critical is this issue? Does it require immediate attention?

Thanks for your help!

I just pulled the vsv out on my 99 Avalon. The hard part is to get the screw loose that holds it in place. I used a 90 degree phillips screwdriver and once I broke it loose it backed out the rest of the way with my fingers. Use a pair of needlenose pliers to remove the hoses. I called my local dealer and the list on part#90910-12271 is $65.90 and jobber is 52.70. Call your Toyota dealer and see if they match the internet price of $52.90, on that part and they usually will. Its worth a little dirt in the eyes to save on the labor charge.

i thought the same thing that i would need a screwdrive with a phillips end that is at 90 degrees at the tip but no worries and sorry you broke your bolt. to get the VSV off first notice the bracket to which it is and attached and follow it down to the canister. remove the bolt (with 10mm socket) attaching the the bracket upon which the VSV is mounted to the canister.

i wish i had looked for this part online. it cost me $100 even at toyota on mission gorge in san diego.

they said if this part (vacuum switch valve) doesnt do the trick to replace part no. 25860-17650G which im assuming is the vacuum vent valve.

Thanks guys, my dealer wanted to sell canister unit $398 as vsv was not sold separately for my 98 4cyl. Camry. So I used that part number and payed $75 (seems like too much for this) and have repaired the Camry. Was P0446, and the vsv did not work when I applied 12 volts to it. Also, the screw did not come with the new vsv and had to use small hacksaw tool to cut head off the original, so had to do some scrounging to find a screw (make sure it is not too long or it will messup the vsv coil). Hey Everyone... I am a new member and this is my first post

I have a 99 I4 camry. few months ago the check engine light came on. First time i got it diagnosed, my mechanic said it was the EGR valve and so had that replaced. the light came on after a day or so. After a few days a whistling sound started as well. the sound start about 5-10 mins of driving (guessing till the car warms up to the running temp) and is there the whole time as long as the pressure is light on the gas pedal as soon as I push it up to 3k rpm or so sound goes off till i ease up on the pedal. diagnostics gave me P0441 & P0446 and the mechanic put it up on the hoist to check it out and said it was the charcoal canister leaking. And my car has taken a major hit on the fuel consumption as it has decreased since this problem start (from 10% to currently about 25%-30% of what i used to get). was wanderning if that is actually the problem because spent quiet a bit on the EGR valve and feel like that was money down the drain.
