ratings and magazines arent kind to the SC430
the ES250 was a simply rebadged camry v6
if that counts as a "bad lexus" i dont know, since i dont consider a lexus to be "bad"
What specifically is bad about the ES250? Have you guys even driven one? I have and it's clearly a smoother, quieter, plusher, more refined car than the '89-'91 Camry was even though the Camry was quite refined too. In auto wrecking yards you can see the substantial differences between an ES250 and Camry. Exampe: The entire floorpan and trunk of an ES250 is coated with sound deadening to reduce noise and vibration and the trunk mat of an ES250 is super thick and heavy to absorb noise. The carpeting of the ES250 is cushioned by thick foam rubber. The doors have an extra rubber seal. Lots of refinements like that.
Ironically, in the same wrecking yards you can see the later model ES's don't differ as much from Camry's as compared to the 1989-1991 models.
The true Lexus duds occured rather recently e.g. l the 2003-'04 GS470 was plagued with numerous driveline problems, squeaks and rattles. Also some GS430's had a hard ride and quality control issues that caused Consumer Reports to scorn it
