replacing nav system with dvd player

2003 SC430...

...It has a navigation system that I never use and I want to replace with a DVD player that can read and play movies like a standard DVD player

the DVD discs that contain the streets and directions and all other information for the nav system contain audio and video, so I'm optomistic about being able to play movies, but the system does not read standard movie dvds

i have access to the dvd through the trunk, but I haven't attempted to look at any of the cables that run from the disc in the trunk to the display in the dash

has anybody ever done this? if not, any suggestions?

my guess is that the dvd has special features, like the ability to respond to human touch and interact with the touch screen, which is why it has trouble playing standard movie dvds

The DVD drive in your NAV system won't play DVD movies, period. You need a separate DVD player.

However, you don't need to yank out the NAV system just yet. In fact you can use the screen and save you a few $$$ on your DVD player purchase. I know www.avelectronic.com sells a TV tuner unit that also accepts RCA inputs. If you do it right this setup will look very clean.

Yes, it's possible. I'm waiting for this VIEWTECH Audio and Video Interface from Coastal Electronic Technologies, Inc. to arrive so I can incorporate my current Vizualogic 7" dual headrest monitors with DVD player and reverse backup camera to the NAVI screen.
