timing belt, setting to TDC

I started my timing belt project. Not clear on one part though.... When I rotate the engine to TDC, I'm not supposed to use the timing marks on the crank cover am I ? Am I looking for a mark on the crank itself ? And if so, where is the other mark that I'm lining up with ? I think I need to remove the crank cover but just want to be sure I don't need it to set TDC before I do. The pictures in the manual are not real clear. Also, I loosened the PS pump and alternator and removed the belts. No need to remove them right ?

thanks,
Bob

Put lower belt cover on, put crank pulley on. Rotate pulley so mark on pulley match 0 deg. You can keep a note on where the key on he crank shaft is so you don't need to use the pulley and belt cover.
There is a hole on cam pulley and a mark on head behind the pulley. Rotate the pulley so you can see the mark through the hole. I believe its with the hole on top then its line up.

The problem that I saw with that was if the belt slipped off the crank you might not know it and then everything would be together. The lower crank mark on the belt slipped one tooth on me a couple of times and I couldn't even tell (feel it) until I checked. I used the marks on the engine block and crank gear.

Well your suppose to rotate the crank from TDC to TDC. And check the alignment of the crank and 2 cam gears before reinstalling the upper timing belt covers.
