Hey guys, I've been a long time camry guy here but now i'm shopping for a Lexus. I've been interested in the SC's for a while now since i've seen their potential and design. I was just wondering which SC is easier, cheaper, and more realiable to mod, boost, and tune? Sorry if this noobish question offends anybody.
with the SC300, you can either turbo the 2JZ-GE already in there (NA-T), swap in a 2JZ-GTE off of a Supra (or an Aristo [GS300], if you're going for the JDM route), or you can swap in the 1JZ-GTE (Twin turbo 2.5L 276 hp), found in the JDM versions of these cars (Soarer)...
with the SC400, you can also turbo it, but it'll require more custom work...
BUT, if you want a 5 speed stick, these were only available in SC300s from 1992-1996, and were pretty rare...
1997+ SC's with VVTi arent as easy to boost as pre 97's...
That pretty much sums it up, tough call.
If you're into boost, probably the six, n/a likely the eight. Not that either setup can't be made to work well regardless of model.
It took me a couple years to really want any more performance since I was enjoying the nice rwd chassis every day.
It depends on how much money you want to spend...
Supra parts will swap into both. Pre '94 SC400's are downright slow.
What it comes down to is money.
You can either buy the SC300, swap a 2jz-gte in, or you can buy the SC400, and turbo that.
What the 2jz-gte will run with a typical-pretty good build, the 1uz-fe will run stock once you put the turbo on it.
Honestly... By the time you swap the 2jz-ge for 2jz-gte stuff, you could have just gone the v8 route and had more power for probably a good bit less money overall.
Neither project is for the fient of heart. They both cost heafty amounts of money.

for anything, anytime; including camry turbos Now with Turbo!
what's the ourpose of this car? If you're looking for something really fast and fun, take the 300 because, like the other members have stated, you can turbo it. It's basically a luxury version of the supra. If you're looking for reliability as well as dependability with plenty of power without putting any money in it, go with the 400. Personally, i'd go with the 400 because i'm a big fan of big displacement and in my opinion, There's no way to go fast without spending big money on the SC300 being that it's not a 2400 pound ricer. It's not a little civic where the exhaust costs 300 bucks.
....if you like to shift for yourself: the last straight six SC300 with the 5-speed manual transmission would be the 1997 model year. Good luck, perhaps you can find one with fairly low miles. Given standard maint.....It will last a long, long time...ez
i personally have a 300 and i love my car. i wish it was stick though. i've recently sat in a 400 for the first time, and i have to say that i love the sound of the V8. it's beautiful. so few ppl actually think of doing an engine swap when they buy a car. so seriously, i wouldn't really worry about that. the sc300 power comes after 4k revs and the 400 has almost all its power under 4k. both cars run about 3k to 3.3k at 80mph, which is kind of annoying b/c it's kind of high--also not good for fuel economy.
it's a tough choice if i'd have to do it again, but most importantly find one that's in good condition. i think if you do you'll have fun either way.
before i got my 88 supra i was looking in to an sc300 i found one with VERY low mile about 80k for $2000 the only reason i didnt get it was cause insurance and my recent accident in my rolla was through the roof they wanted close to 600 a month for that car i wanted to buy it and just not have it insured but my parents wouldnt let me, now i dont care tho i have my camry and i am quite content. Well any way im a sound system kinda guy and go for show not go and the sc300 and the 400 require a custom made adapter plate for the stereo, and all the wireing is gonna have to be custome if you want i can find some wireing diagrams and color charts that i had for it when i was planning on getting one, just a heads up the sub in the back is a 10 inch sub, any standard sub would fit in there and wire right up. the only thing is that im not sure if it was amplified from an amp hidden some where and it would have to be bypased or if you can just run it off of the stock amp. another thing you have to look out for is the guage cluster uses a very find led lighting scheme and most of the time the clusters are burnt out so be careful theres a guy who rewires them and also does custom lighting on the clusters on ut there he can also change up the lighting color on the climate controls and stereo if you decide to keep your current one.
