Angry Plug Replacment - ES250

I'm trying to change the spark plugs - and wires - on my '90 ES250. Cylinders 2, 4, 6, and 5 I have changed both plugs and wires already. (Engine is the 2VZ-FE, plugs 2,4,6 are in front, 5 is nearest distributor.) I can't seem to get to the others without major surgery.

Is there a trick to getting at the no. 1 and 3? I see that the intake may have to be removed but I was hoping that here was a trick or tip to get a hand back there. I know on some older GM vehicles, I had to either rotate the engine (tranny in neutral, remove front motor mounts and rotate forward then hold with second hole in motor mount strut.) or actually lift the engine block.

Has anybody gotten to the number 1 and 3 spark plugs without removing the intake??

Thanks!!

OKBill

The upper plenum is actually fairly easy to take off. Sorry it's not old school like a chevy or ford but that's progress. The trickiest parts will the the two bolts holding the egr pipe and the braces that hold the intake to the block.

Another trick will be to loosen (but not remove) the bolts that hold the bottom of the braces. Use a torque wrench on the 4 bolts that hold the upper and lower intake together. Be very very careful for the brass and blue plastic sensors with the 2 fingers sticking out with vac lines connected. The plastic become brittle and breaks easy. They're about $80 each. Best to disconnect the vac lines from those sensor from the manifold end. Sometimes the vac line sticks to the plastic and will try to take the sensor with it.

Wear goggles when taking off the fuel line (banjo fitting) on the side of the intake. It may have pressureized fuel in it.

Good luck

Cool

You can do it with a flexi shaft extension and a 60* joint.
Just learn to take the intake off... They're only actually held on by like... 4 bolts once you ditch the EGR.

You need to take it off and clean the entire upper intake off anyways. Every 6 months it'll have so much carbon from the exhaust baked up inside it that it'll take 5-10hp. Who want's to guess what yours looks like anyways!
