I just bought two 2008 Toyotas (Wilm, NC) and did not notice until after purchase that Highlander did not have cross bars.
I later purchased bars through dealership for $200 and went home to install. Thought this would be simple. After no luck getting caps removed, I drove to dealership. Told them I coud not figure out how to get caps off. Mechanic was on break and offered to get them off. He couldn't figure out how to get them off.
We went inside to one of the service coordinators. He told me I could schedule a visit and it would cost $40 to have them installed. I asked what he would charge just to take the caps off. Answer was $40. I said "no thanks". Not a good start to "service" experience.
I found this thread and the approach from TomM1 worked easily. Hate to admit I'd have never figured this one out myself. Thanks TomM1 !!
What is the purpose of selling a vehicle with a roof rack and no cross bars anyway ?

Gently ease one under each side about midway down each side. Then gently pull outward beginning on the inboard side. Two clicks each side. Done!
