It is mechanical with electrical assist via a worm gear on the steering column. The RAV4, Corolla, Matrix, and Yaris (to name a few) all use the electrical-type now.
I think the main advantage is the lack of power robbing when it is not needed, plus even when it is used it is a much more direct form of assist, versus the energy conversions when using a hydraulic-type setup. The other advantage is more precise control of how much assist is provided and when using computer control.
