I was easily able to get the end caps off after fabricating a 1/16" thick 1" wide piece of steel 6" long. I made a 45 degree bend 1" in from one end, This easily fits under the side of the end cap so that you can release the plastic tabs. The secret is to be on a ladder and push down on the end cap while spreading the outside edge with the tool. once the plastic tabs are release it comes off easily as shown in the instructions.

I just recently bought a 2008 Highlander Hybrid with the crossbars installed. Upon driving it on the interstate I am getting a lot of wind noise. When I inspected the bars I noticed an arrow on the bars, both facing towards the rear of the SUV. I also noticed that the crossbars are shaped like a wing, with a thick edge on one side and a narrow edge on the the other, in this case pointing towards the front of the SUV. Since you installed your own, can you tell me if my crossbars are installed backwards?
Thanks.
