I've been driving stick for 10 years! The weirdness is with how the gear stick goes into 1st (not the engine or the gears themselves). It's the feeling of when you haven't really put it into gear the right way. It's like I put it half way instead of all the way. Maybe it has a short-shift? I have no idea since I've never driven a car with a short shift before.
