3rd Generation Door handle theft

Decided to make a post to talk about this issue...

My 94' Camry recently got broken into, whoever did it forcedthe door handle out and opened the door, stole some stuff in my car, anyway, just wondering if you guys can help me find out how did he opened it exactly (like what he/she did through that little gap to open it), and if there's any way of making it less easier to force the door handle out, or at least have something inside to protect the lock release so it would be more difficult to open the door from the gap, here's a photo for you guys.

Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated, because I hate how easy it seems to get into my camry (well, I mean the way he/she did it, I know there's other ways to get it, but to think the door handle can be this easy to "crack" and open, what's the point of having the lock at all...)

The lucky thing is the door handle's damage is not serious, just need to get that handle back inside the door and it'll look perfect again, was told repair fee will be around $30~$40 CDN by an uncle of mine who does repairs at home.
