30,000 mi checkup: is it really necessary?

My car will be due for its 30,000 mi checkup in the the next couple months. My dad had orginally told me that it costs around $100. However he found a service booklet from the dealership and it said the checkup is $435 and list all the things checked on the car. To me most of this seems uneessisary. I was also wondering if I should take it to our regular mechanic instead of the dealership so I can save some money.
