The reason we do not use metal clamps to hold the bulbs in place is because in aftermarket applications (depending on the application) the clamp actually prevent the bulb from being inserted into the the headlights. We have had this design for 7 years now with no problems =)
The Xtreme kit that we sell has been around for approximately 5 years now with very positive results. We actually chose to phase out the xenonDepot line that used the Philips ballasts as we found that the Xtreme ballasts were outperforming them as the Xtreme ballasts are epoxy sealed to ensure that they are water tight.
