Get a manual.

Often it's easier to pull both out of the car and separate them from there. I had a clausterphobic barfing session once taking just the transmission out of a Nissan Micra to change the clutch.

Isn't there a downloadable manual in this site somewhere? I looked through it, more advanced than a Haynes manual.
I'm still looking for someone to tell me how high I need to lift the engine up to clear the mounts from the lower control arms so I can replace them. The service manual states as first step 'Remove engine and transaxle' and I don't have a solid tree branch to hoist them with.
