I think it happens after driving under rain on uneven surfaces. In some angle water can sweep through the trunk seating If that metal curvature doesn't flush with the body very well. The dealer can't duplicate on their floor on a level surface. They have to position the wheels in a diagonally opposite uneven surface to crack open the seating. She may not see water all the time even if driving under rain.. but some instance on uneven surface place those diagonally opposite wheels in different level. For example, turning on a curve, the back wheel run over the curb, so on...
I figured out that for my Nissan car long time ago, but the dealer couldn't do anything about it though it was under warranty.
Tell her to look for the Trunk alignment with the body. Does it seat very well? If that metal curvature flush with the body, then replace the weather strip, that may help.
