engine swap 3ac 1983 4wd tercel

Hello to all,
I am new to this forum and in search of some information.
This is the second 1983 4wd tercel I have owned. I really like this car and the gas mileage except for the power. I live in Colorado and it does fine in the flat land but whenever I am in the mountains I need to be concerned about how many people I have in the veichle or else I crawl over the mountain passes. My old tercel had a high altitude carburetor on it and was a Colorado car. The one I presently have is a California model and I even noticed less power than the Colorado model. There is good compression and everything else seems like it is working well with the engine and drive train.
The engine has 190, 000 miles on it.
I am wondering if anyone has any ideas of what other engines I could swap to get more power.
I am also wondering what else I can do with the existing engine to get more power.
I am also willing to modify this engine when it comes time to rebuild it.
I do all my own work.
I thank you all in advance
