On my 95 sedan I can open the trunk, pull the liner away from the side and see the mechanism. I can press up where the cable connects and the door opens. No cable necessary. If the door "spring" is broken (mine has two rubber looking nubs) then you should be able to release the lock while gently pulling out on the door. (I'd use a plastic card rather than a screw driver) Until you get a spring replacement put a piece of foam between the door and the body to push the door out. (A chunck of that weather stripping with sticky on one side works OK.)

Often, it's the loose screw between the steering wheel and the driver's seat that needs to be fixed first!
