It does require removal of the rear seat cushion, but not the package shelf. Once the rear seat cushion is out you will expose one screw on each side that holds each side bolster on. Remove that bolt and lift up on the side bolsters. They will come right out. That will expose the 3 nuts that hold the upper strut mount to the car and the one larger nut that holds the the strut itself. It is a bit tight, but there is just enough room to work in there. Make sure all 4 nuts on each side are torqued to spec. This should take you only 5 or 10 minutes.
