You label it on your return packaging so when they receive the box with the returned item, they know why you're sending it back by looking it up in their database. Giving you an RMA basically means they're going to take it back. Still up in the air as to who they are expecting to pay shipping. Some places (like Amazon) will prepay the postage and give you a UPS (or whoever they use) shipping label to print out and put on the box.
