i would check your wiring. you may be running your amp with too low of a resistance. Find out the config of your sub and the full specs on your amp.

Also, what KooL means is that is there proper ventilation for the amp. ie: is the fans(if any) blocked by anything.

I would also make sure your gain is not turned up too much. If you have the gain up too high, not only will you get clipping, but this will heat the amp up like you describe.

The smell from your sub may be your voice coils burning up, leading me to believe it could be a wiring issue or you are just overrunning the amp.
