The air recycle answer seems logical enough I will look into that.

As for the ABS issue I am having the dealer look into it at the next scheduled service. Normally I am paranoid about such things but I did some additional "brake testing" on dry pavement and the normal noise was present compared to the more dramatic noise I experienced on the ice. So at this point I am concluding the additional noise on the ice was due to the ABS and the VBS having to work harder/longer to attempt to get the job done, which was more difficult that on dry pavement obviously.
