I have heard good things about Magnacor too, but they are really expensive. I'm going to try to have a set of Accel or MSD wires made up, which should be much cheaper.
No, the 6AL does not advance or retard timing, it's just a capacitive discharge unit that provides Multiple Sparks under 3000-3500rpm. Above that, there's just one big spark.
The 3VZ-FE does have a distributor, and the 6AL (and any 6 series ignition) cannot be used with a DIS. I'll let you all know when I am going to install it. Photographers welcome!
