Iq Mpg

Does anyone have any idea what the MPG will be? In Europe, it's in the 50's. I think I read in Motor Trend the US version will be in the high 30's. I hope that's not true.
Why can't we get that kind of gas mileage in the states? If Motor Trend is correct, what's the point in bringing it here? Just buy a Yaris instead.

You have to think what kind of power and gearing we need here in the US vs. what they need in europe. Here in the US, our roads are long,straight, and our average speeds quite high. The car is going to have a different gearing just so it can keep up on the US highways without overheating plus the engine is small enough it's really going to be working to maintain those speeds.

I myself was also dissapointed but when you take all of these factors into account, it's just something that comes with the territory.

The iQ isnt' being pulled over here for mpg, it's being pulled to give Scion something to make it stand out again.

Also consider, depending on the source, that the UK gallon (imperial gallon) is larger than the US gallon which impacts the MPG rating you might be seeing. Another issue is the way that mileage is sometimes calculated in european nations. In the US, its done by doing a physical driving of the car. In europe, the manufacturer is allowed to compute mileage based upon emissions output. So if geared a certain way, they can, theoretically, get better mileage numbers. But forced to drive the car on actual roads, in actual conditions, the Euro numbers tend to be a bit high, imho.

It also seems likely the US will get a 1.3L engine and not the 1.0L engine Europe gets, which is more thrifty.

The 36 city MPG is impressive but highway 37 MPG is not.

I got 33.5 MPG in my Gen 4 Camry on real highway driving. This was a cross-country trip with some attention to MPG but of course driving near speed limit which in some places is 75 and 80 MPH.

If I drive my Camry with attention to MPG (stay near 2100 RPM in top gear) I can easily get 35+ MPG on it.

So I'd be interested to see what a real driver obtains on this new car more so than test numbers. It seems a bit disappointing at first to see only 37 MPG on a smaller car but perhaps still 50+ is obtainable.

Here is the skinny...

MPG=

100% hwy driving I got 34.7mpg [194.miles driven] filled it with 5.6 gal. speed driven, 70mph

70%hwy/30%city 35.1mpg [214.6 miles driven] filled it with 6.1 gal. speed driven, 70/mph varied

100% country/towns 40.2mpg [209.1 miles driven] filled it with 5.2gal. speed driven, 55/45mph

This is Florida driving figures, yours may vary.


I have not yet tested 100% city driving.

The test was done without the air condition on, that has to be factored into summer driving.


This is a super fun car to drive.
