Some exciting FT-86 news (if true) today. According to Motor Trend, as part an overall plan to more closely converge Toyota’s products with Subaru, the upcoming FT-86 will be powered by the 305hp / 290 lb-ft Subaru STI 2.5L turbo 4-cylinder engine, rather than the less powerful Subaru engine originally planned for the FT-86.
If true, this would mean that the FT-86 should share the same powerplant as the Subaru version of the FT-86.
The STI motor will hold a lot of HP but the issue is with the pistons. I would do a piston swap if one would want more than 500whp. Which is easy with tuning/E85 and a turbo upgrade.
Any word on who will provide the transmission?

^Haven't heard anything yet....and thanks for the info on the piston swap, interesting.
Yes if infact it is the same motor as say a 2008 STI then the pistons are good for about 500 AWD HP. You can give or take a little depending on the dyno used and how it is driven. I have seen 600whp on the STI trans before, the wrx trans sucks, only good for about 300whp and then needs some work.
Forged pistons will run ya about 500$ along with another 500$ if you have a good place to swap them for you. If you are in Texas I know a couple places worth taking it.

Love the STi engine! makes a mean sound, ya ive heard of the pistons only being good for 525. so if its a subie boxer engine does that mean the FT-86 will be all wheel drive or are we waiting to see where the tranny comes from? i love this car already so much! id be happy with rwd or awd! turning out to be a sick car!
