Weird Overheating Problem

Anybody experienced this b4? When I start up in cold weather, if the heat/cool lever is pushed to heat (right), the temp gage needle goes all the way to the red line (hot) before the (assume) t-stat opens and it cools down to about 12:00 oclock. It doesn't go past 12 o'clock if the lever is left on cold (left). In this mode, if you push the lever to heat, the needle moves to the right again, but will eventually come back down some, but not as cool as when on cold. Ideas?? My mechanic is stumped... changed tstats many times. It started after a wholesale hose changeout I think. Is there a valve and a baffle that opens when the selector lever is changed?
