Scion XB 1st Gen-Engine Missing-Coil pack issue

I hope this forum has some other mechanics on board.

I have a 2005 Scion XB (89,000 miles) and the other night the engine lights came on and it began missing on cylinder #3.

I had new plugs so I changed them, no change.

Took it to Autozone, they ran the OBD and said "P0303-Misfire #3". So switched the coil-packs between #3 and #2 cylinder and now get "P0302-Misfire #2"

This seemed logical and to me it confirmed what I suspected that the coil pack (original) had failed.

I replaced it. But, dang, no change. Still missing. (I did change plugs to the expensive platinum plugs, but I doubt that had any effect.)

So I assumed that maybe I had gotten a bad coil (Borg Warner) from O'Reillys. They gave me a new one, tried it and still missing.

Any ideas?

Put the original plugs(new of course) back in there. Use only what it's designed to use. If you're supposed to run standards, run standards. If your supposed to run platnum, run platnum. use NGK or Denso only.

I'll bet that might be your issue. let us know.

Thanks, I'll let you know

Yeah I'm heading over to Wally World and get a new set. The NGK's have (I'm ashamed to say cause I'm an FAA licensed airplane mechanic) never been changed in 50k miles. The gaps were massive (.050 I'm guessing) and electrodes rounded off.

I did re-gap the old ones and drop them back in with no change better or worse.

I hope it's that simple. Maybe they are all so worn. I had noticed the past 6 weeks it was a tiny bit slower to start. Wife didn't notice it but I did.

I'll let you know.

Thanks again

Duhhh

OK, fixed it.

My initial OBD test said cylinder #3 was misfiring. I had my cylinder numbering wrong. I was counting right to left for some reason. So I changed out a good coil for a good coil.

Went back to Advanced Auto and they said cylinder #2 was misfiring and the service guy showed me #2 cylinder. Boy I felt stupid.

So I went home switched the coil I thought was bad for the real bad coil and we were back in business.

And, with the right plugs now also....

Same prob, #4

I had the SAME problem today but mine was #4... changed plugs first, and finally went to get it read.

I was reading on another forum site that it's possible the coil packs are under a 100k warranty... have you read or heard anything about that?
