If your throttle body was dirty and the ports for the EGR circuit was plugged, it is entirely possible; however, depending on how you clean the throttle body, the cleaner might also have reach the EGR circuits and free them up. Hard to say!

I was just taking a guess on the VSV, since that is the most common cause on the 5sfe for code 71.
