xb rides hard

my wife says our '12 xb rides hard. so much that she now dislikes the car. i even lowered the tire pressure to 34 front and 32 rear... doesn't help... is there a 'soft ride kit' for the xb? are the struts or springs from a camry a fit?

You might want to lower the tire pressure a bit further, down to 30 PSI all around. Unfortunately it is an xB and not a Camry XLE so the ride will be a bit stiffer. I'd look into different aftermarket companies on the web and see what they have to offer.

another idea I am going to consider is a smaller diameter wheel and taller tires to maintain the present outside diameter (presently they are 16" with 205/55 tires)... 15" or maybe even 14" rims if they clear the brakes and have the correct offset.

True, having more of a sidewall will give you more cushion on the road. I don't know if 14's will clear your calipers but the 15's should.

i know 14's wont clear but most of the 15's should. Depends on the spacing set aside for the calipers behind the wheel.

I'll try a stock 14" wheel from a late 90's tacoma someday... it looks that it may have the shape to clear the calliper... i'm not in any rush as the xb is now in my hands (bought something different for her...) and it rides fine in my opinon. I even raised the pressure to 40psi.
