$16,705 (CA$) MSRP for a Yaris LE w/ pkg C, ABS, EBD, A/C, Pwr win/locks, keyless entry.

$18,370 (CA$) MSRP for a Yaris RS w/ pkg B, A/C, pwr win/locks, keyless entry.

Hmm.. in the US, after exchange rate would be:

$14,229 for the LE above.
$15,647 for the RS above.

It is $13,245 for a Scion xA and it has pretty much everything the LE does (except the EBD). And it's no haggle. So aside from style differences. The xA is cheaper and gives you more standard features.

If prices are like that in the US. It's looking just like how the ECHO sedan was. More expensive than a Corolla CE.

(I sure hope the styling wins peoples wallets, because it's definitely NOT a cheap car or unless they plan to offer like $2000 off sticker price.)

Just this weekend, I see a 2006 Corolla LE Automatic for $13,888. w/ 6 disc CD changer. (besides the ABS and EBD, that Corolla LE has everything a Yaris LE does and has more hp, and gets better fuel economy on the highway.)

Toyota has disappointed me again. (This will be a repeat of the Echo sedan in the US) xA and Yaris are too close in comparison. So unless people are willing to pay MORE for a more stylish car with less content... then it's not looking good for the Yaris in the US assuming we get the same level of content as Canada and their prices hold the same.

Please don't think I'm a Yaris hater, I've been waiting for this car to come out since the first Echo hatchbacks arrive in Canada and we in the US never got it. I just didn't want it to be like the Echo Sedan we got here, where you couldn't sell one of those at all, and the sales figure has gone down every yr. to the point where you can't even get one off a Dealer's lot in 2005. I really hoped Toyota learned from this that you just can't price a car that close together.

Looking at today's car ad's in the Newspaper.

Camry LE Auto's go for $16,888. (MSRP $20,915) Discount of: 19% or $4027 off.
Corolla LE Auto's go for $13,888. (MSRP $16,755) Discount of: 17% or $2867 off.

So unless there's some heavy discounting with the Yaris like they do with the Corolla and Camry, it's not going to work out.

Yaris LE (MSRP $14,229) Assume discount of: 17% or $2419 off. Then it should be going for $11,810. hmm... that would be a GREAT price... so Hopefully they discount like they for the new Yaris in the US.

I admire your research and efforts to advocate for lower prices very much. If the information I have obtained is correct, the Yaris is going to be quite expensive in Canada. Particularly if it is without the side and curtain air bags that its competitors are going to have. Further more, no haggling is allowed. I do not know how true it is. Cheers.

Oh is there no Haggling allowed in Canada? if that is true.. yeah it's quite an expensive car. But how does it compare to the old "echo hatchback" pricing?

A fully loaded 06 5 door RS with air is 440 bux more expensive than the 05...

But it also adds foglamps, power windows, 6 disc changer, painted mirrors, and an upsize on the wheel/tire from 14" to 15" all not available on the 05 RS...

Gentlemen I think you are both right. The Yaris is much better equipped than its predecessor but will hopefully be sold for not too much more. However, it is expensive when compared to Toyota's own Corolla, which is one model up. In addition, please note that ABS is now standard only for the RS trim whilst cruise control and theft alarm are not offered in Canada any more. I think one of the reasons for this being the case is that Corollas are assembled here in North America and the Yaris is shipped from Japan. My wife has already ordered an RS anyway, and that is why I join this forum to benefit from the postings of knowedgeable fellow members like you.

ABS is not standard on the Corolla up here either, and requires a bundled upgrade similar to the Yaris RS to get it as well...

Comparing a stripped Corolla CE to a fully suited up Yaris RS is not a comparison...Add the same level of options and the car is $3000 more...

Yaris CE 13580
Corolla CE 16675

Comparing a Similarly Optioned Corolla to a fully suited up Yaris RS is $4500 more...

Corolla S, Sport Package (Body Kit, Stereo Upgrade, Power everything, Air Con ABS and EBD) - 23820
Yaris RS, Package B (Body Kit, Stereo Upgrade,Power everything, Air Con, ABS and EBD) - 19265

Then Add tax on the extra cost, and interest over the lease/finance term on top of this and you will be paying at least $6000 more...

Cheers

My wife and I almost decided in favour of the Corolla, after considering the Smart for 2, the Mini, the Civic, the Corolla and of course, the Yaris/Echo. After seeing your last post, I am glad that we seem to have made the right choice. When we put our deposit down, there was hardly any information about the Yaris available. We only based our choice on the Echo. That is why I was very excited when I finally found out some news about the pricing and equipment packaging of the Yaris on the internet a few days ago. The Yaris will not stretch our budget as much as the other choices will but will still offer more or less the same space, convenience, economy, safety and handling. The Corolla is a good car but is now proven to be more expensive than a similarly equipped Yaris by a significant margin. Also, we like the look of the Yaris more, subjectively. It is also easier to park. But still, the Corolla will be one excellent Toyota for the folks who need it. The same should be true about the other cars that I mentioned above. Thanks for the great research.

Yeah I agree.. if in Canada you can not haggle and have to pay sticker price, then Yes I would agree that the Yaris would still be a good deal.

However in the US. it's another story, with Camry LE's and Corolla LE's have a $3k difference.

Camry LE $16,888
Corolla LE $13,888

So the Yaris "LE" should be $10,888 "Sale price".

But we won't know the pricing for the US market till next yr.!

Thanks for the info of Canada's car purchase prices and all.

But isn't the US only getting the 3-dr Yaris, hence leaving the 5-dr market to the xA?

We shouldn't be comparing CA$ with U$ based solely on exchange rates. My recent experience with waiting for pricing on the new Mazda MX-5 (Miata) was disappointing: the price in the States turned out to be about 30% less than in Canada (similarly equipped), with the exchange rate being 21% at the time!

So hang tight US, you'll be golden. Canadians are routinely screwed for their product loyalty!

Canada

Have been humming and hawing over the past year whether or not to buy a smart4-2 or wait for the Yaris.

Saw the smart car in Europe and loved its funky looks, mileage, etc. Have been on the smart forum for over a year, and I am starting to see problems creeping in with some smarts. Maybe a breaking in period for any new car coming to Canada.

To my mind the smart car is a great commuter city car, and if I lived in an urban area I would get it with no hesitation. However, where we live in rural Vancouver Island, the smart is just too small and confining for our needs.

We looked at the Chevrolet Aveo/Pontiac Wave clones, Kia Rio5, Hyundai and Suzuki. Toyota is a recognizable brand name for good car manufacturing, higher resale values and reliability. We opted for the Toyota Yaris.

Four of my neighbours all drive Toyotas and have nothing but praise for them. One drives a 2005 Echo Hatchback and says its the best car he has ever driven. He traded in a Mercury Marquis gas guzzler for his Echo. I am retired, and will probably not put more than 7-8000 kms per year on the car. 90% of our driving will be on Vancouver Island.

Went into the Toyota dealer in Duncan and put down my $500 deposit to order the car in.

We opted for the Yaris Hatchback, 5 door LE. 5 speed manual. These little guys should be driven manually as you get a better feel for the car and the road. Driving an automatic is just too boring. We didn't get a/c as who needs it here on VI. Neither do we need a block heater. A single CD player is also sufficient for our needs.

Here is our pricing on the 2006 Toyota Yaris 5 door hatchback, 5 speed manual.

5 door LE model $ 14910.00
Freight/PDI $ 1010.00
Tire/Batt Tax $ 20.00
PST/GST $ 2231.60

Total: $ 18171.60

Colour chosen was the Copper Orange Mica

More to follow when it gets here, sometime in November.

No Haggling?

No Haggling with Toyota Canada? Wrong! Give this a read : http://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/internet/index.cfm?itemID=300&lg=e and be sure to pass it on. Toyota dealers have been "misleading" us for years.

Does anyone know how this can be passed on to all the ToyotaNation Forum users?

It's not as big of a problem as some of you guys make it out to be. Remember, Toyota intends to replace the Scion models only after a few years, and the vehicles replacing the current lineup could be totally different that what's here right now. The Yaris is going to kick ass, though.
