What can you fit in your Echo hatch?

Hi everybody:

First time poster. I drove an '05 Echo RS hatch yesterday and loved it. However, I'm concerned about what it can and cannot carry, and how it would be on a long trip of 1000 miles. Has anyone here comfortably fit a mountain bike INSIDE their hatch? Does anyone take their vehicle on long road trips loaded with luggage? How is it under conditions such as these?

I'm tossing around the Echo and a Matrix. I personally prefer the feel of the Echo (and the fuel economy!), but I may have to go for the not-as-fun, not-as-economical Matrix.

Thanks so much.

Well I don't have a hatchback I do have a Echo sedan and you can get from the dealer/factory a bike rack that plugs into a little reciever on the back of the car.

I have drivin my Echo on the Highway for a short 300k road trip and I really liked it. Very zippy and doesn't power out on the hills around Kamloops. I also went with the sedan because of the huge trunk they have, you can stuff a small family in the trunk..

You know those water coolers that corporate companies keep in their lunchrooms? You know those huge bottles of water that go on top of the cooler?

I fit 8 of those in the BACK of my RS, while me and my dad sat comfortably in the front. I'm certain you can fit a mtn bike... just put a plastic sheet over your flipped down back seats, and guide it in sideways.
