Surging Yaris engine

Has anyone else noticed a surge in the rpm's when driving thier Yaris while the engine is cold. Our 3dr auto surges until the "cool" light on the dash goes out. By surging I mean, the rpm's drop maybe 150-200rpm's for a fraction of a second maybe 5-10 times in the first 2 km's, then the "cool"light goes out and everythings normal again

Echo's and Yaris both do that. I have also noticed that it seems to hold the car in second a little longer as well. I try not to drive it till that little blue light goes out.

Almost all cars do that when it's cold, especially an automatic, to help the engine get to working temperature quicker.

If that's the case, you're just wasting gas and creating more pollution, at the same time doing possible damage to the catalytic converter. There's no need to "baby your car" and wait for the blue light to go off, just crank the engine, wait maybe 10 to 20 seconds if you wish, and just put it in D and DRIVE!!! DRIVING THE CAR IN A COLD START IS THE QUICKEST WAY TO GET THE CAR UP TO WORKING TEMPERATURE!!! Plus your heater WILL actually provide heating faster and HOTTER, and you won't be WASTING GAS and MAKING EXTRANEOUS POLLUTION, and your catalytic converter won't go RIP sooner.

For the people that still want to hold on to such dumb habits, continue to do so and, while you're at it, keep the garage doors closed at the same time, so "the car won't get a cold and have to see a doctor."

^^^add to that, one should put in thinner motor oil for winter. And when driving the car while the blue light is still on, just drive in a gentle manner (no racing the engine or redlining, and accelerate at a leisure pace) should do no more damage than letting the car sit there getting warmed up.

That seems excessive and I'd go to the dealer about it, could be a sensor isn't reading right when it's cold but ours does the same thing.

Everyone will give you thier Two bits worth and they will give it to you whether or not it's right because they feel that they are. Go to the Toyota dealer and talk to them and also plugging it in will help it warm up faster.

I would also check with your dealer about changing the grade of your oil untill you talk with your Toyota service department incase it Voids your warrenty.
