However you must remember brand new cars in general get a little less gas mileage, not to mention it is winter, and cars get worse gas mileage in colder weather. Also your personal driving style can affect gas mileage tremendously.
Shift no higher than 4,000rpms and feather the gas during the next time you fill up. I'm pretty sure you'll get great gas mileage. Keep it around 60-70 mph on the freeway (~100 kilometeres/hour). Automobiles waste much more gas going 80 mph than they do going 65 mph.

Why? and sixTOO are right. New cars need time to break in before the best mileage can be obtained and driving at high speed consumes more gas than cruising at under 100 kms per hr. I do not know how fast you drive but if you try to maintain a steady speed at under 100 kms per hr for as long as you can, you will do quite well. Though BC is relatively warm in winter, still cars will have better fuel economy in summer. My auto Yaris(RS) uaually gives me 500 to 540 kms before getting down to the last bar of the fuel meter and I know I am about average in this respect. Therefore, I think there is a good chance that you will get better and better numbers in the time to come. Happy motoring!
Hmm, we had a 97 Corolla DX Plus, 00 Corolla LE, and have an 02 Camry XLE and 05 Prius. The Camry is dead on and it's now at 80,000+kms. The Prius, the best I've achieved was 4.4L/100km this past summer and it now has 21,000kms.

I am experiancing the same thing. I've just taken my Yaris on a road trip to visit family over the holidays and I'm getting much better mileage out of it now. The last tank was 600 kms before I filled up. Just hang in there and it will get better. I have a 2003 Nissan Altima and it did the same thing.
At least I'm not the only one who's getting bad gas mileage, I took the car to Toyota after the 4th tank and only averaging about around 400km per tank, and they did a computer check and said everything was normal, they said according to the computer readout the car should be getting 59mpg on the highway. which translates into over 800km's a tank. Can you say I just filled up for about the 6th time, but this time I had driven until the last bar was flashing, total km's..472. The main reason we bought this car was because it was rated better gas milelage than our other Toyota that we traded in, but so far it's averaging about 5mpg less.
<sigh> For the last time, it isn't Toyota's fault that the mileage is bad (or any other company for that matter). It's EPA/Transport Canada that requires the manufacturer to put their ratings on the spec sheet and not the manufacturer's own rating.
I'm not get 1000kms per tank as I should based on 4.4L/100km and a 45 litre tank on the Prius but 800km is damn good and I only refuel 35 litres.
alohaYaris, how much did you put into that 472km tank? the full 45 litres?

I just want to make sure I understand your mileage. You said 8.5 liters per 100 kilometer, right? If the math is right, that equals about 27 and a half miles per gallon US.
Ouch, that hurts, I can get more than that in my 250 horsepower Saab Viggen.
Just for comparison purposes, I thought I would post the mileage my wife is getting with her '05 Echo Hatchback. I know it's not an exact comparison but it should be similar.
Since getting the car in July of this year, she has driven just over 10,000km now, and averaging 7.1L/100km. We always get more than 500km before reaching the flashing single bar on the gas gauge. Our driving habit is 50% city/50% hwy.

I had used 38.369 liters to go the 472 km's since the previous fill, and its a 42 liter tank, not 45
