Just found out that Honda Fit is already eligable for pre-order and just put in deposit to order one. Although my Yaris RS 5-doors is going to be here in March. I would like to share some difference between two:
Yaris vs Fit
DOHC VVTi vs SOHC VTEC
106hp vs 109hp
4 spds auto vs 5 sps auto (peddle switch available on top model)
3drs or 5 dr vs 5 drs only
no cruise vs cruise
dual airbags (06) vs side airbags with curtain
regular seats vs seats can lay down flat
current model start at 06 vs current model start at 02 (Asia)
Will adding more when I go through the complete spec. sheet
Ah, but it's not necessarily an apples-to-oranges comparison here. The Fit may have slightly more power and weigh roughly the same, but it's less aerodynamic. It may have an extra notch on the auto gearbox, but from what I hear it doesn't handle as well as the Yaris. Arguably, the Yaris looks better inside and out - important given that these are both pitched as "cool" youth cars. The Fit looks just a bit too much like a wagon to me - not enough to stop me from considering it, but enough to make me wonder whether it'll still feel modern in a few years' time.
The one area I think Honda has an edge in is audio. You don't have to spend anything extra to get an aux-in jack for your iPod in the Fit, while for some reason Toyota wants to charge $322 just for that privilege. There's probably more power in the stock Fit audio system too. But of course, whether or not this is important also depends on your driving habits. If you're rarely driving more than 15 minutes at a time, you might not care how good the audio is!
i'd stay away from honda due to their crappy customer service unless you're planning to own a honda for less than 5 yrs/ 100 000km.
we have a honda van and we need an airbag repair, even though they've never deployed. it's going to cost $1500 and honda wont cover it because our van is older than 5 years.
I think the cars serve slightly different purposes. I'm guessing that the Yaris is a little more fun to drive, likely handles better (and I think look much better than the wagon-ish Fit). The Fit seems to be a little more practical with all the seat folding / flipping / flattening options. I personally prefer the Yaris but I think Toyota could learn a thing or two from Honda about how to have seats that properly fold flat in the base model and have standard ABS. Safety items should not be used as a marketing device to sell more expensive models.
Even though I prefer the Yaris I think the Fit will steal Toyota sales by attracting the more practical & safety conscious buyers.
That's quite a balanced view. Another factor I will consider as relevant is fuel efficiency. If the Fit has better fuel economy, I will be tempted to take a good look at it.
Well, according to Toyota, there won't be a tach available on the U.S. Yaris liftbacks. That's a big minus in my column. I e-mailed Toyota and asked them if they were going to have a tach, and they resonsed by saying that it was an option that "wasn't available at this time." How can you have all those features and NOT offer a tach?
I will look an an xA and a Fit when we replace my wife's Civic (in the next couple of years). I certainly hope that Toyota eventually offers a tach in the liftback or that the person who answered my e-mail was wrong.
That's one thing that bugs about the new Yaris. No tach in the hatch. If you buy a stick, you need to know revs. The center armrest needs to be offered as an option along with that tach.
This is about the only blemish I see on an otherwise very nice compact car.
There's a couple things wrong with your comparison. Yaris RS has fold flat 60/40 rear seats and front seats are "sport" seats.
Sorry for the confusion. What I mean is Fit can has the front seats laydown flat like a bed and Yaris RS does has 60/40 split like regular cars does
Fit: _ _ _/ Yaris _/ _/

I test drove the Yaris RS 3-doors & RS 5-doors (both Auto) and seems like that they both have tach. Can you verify? Thanks...
I refer to the last two posts about the availability of tachometers in hatch back Yaris models by YARISinWHITE and socalcookie respectively. Gentlemen, you can both be right. There can be a chance that hatch backs sold in the USA do not have tachometers. We do have them here in Canada.

1. gen. Yaris had 40/60 rear seats that could be pushed forth/back together and lie down individually. You could then turn the whole bench up against the front seats and get a large plain floor in the back.
2. gen. Yaris has 40/60 rear seats that can both be pushed and tilted independently and uses "Easy Flat" so you can lie them down into the floor in a single motion and get a large plain floor in the back.

The Canadian Yaris has a tach. The U.S. versions don't. How brilliant is that?
I've a couple of five-speeds without tachs and it sucks (2000 Civic DX hatchback, 1992 Mitsubishi Expo LRV). It boggles my mind that Toyota touts the Yaris as being such a feature-packed car — but yet the don't offer such a basic ammenity as a tachometer? Hello? Toyota? You out there?
