Good day all. I have had my new, 2006, Yaris for almost a week now and I am very pleased with it. There are a couple of things I have noticed and I want to check if they are typical of your experiences or not. 1) When the engine and trany are cold it seems to stay in 2nd gear longer than it should. I have to drive at 3000rpm for 10 or 15 seconds before it kicks in to 3rd gear. Then it shifts fine after that. It has happened 3 or 4 times already. 2) When I lift my foot off the gas the transmission seems to slow the car down as if I was downshifting in a manual transmission car. It’s subtle but I thought it would coast in gear a little better than that after lifting off the gas. It does however coast extremely well when in neutral! On the dealer fill I have so far went 325km on half a tank. I know it’s not a good indication of mileage but it’s encouraging. On ‘my’ first fill I’ll get the tires to max psi, 44lbs, and see how far I can go. I drive very conservatively and try to lift off the gas and stay off the brake as much as possible. Now being the type of guy I am, I paid $21,000.00 Cnd funds, out the door, all in, etc. in Toronto for the LE ‘B’ package. I think I got a good deal as I figure I knocked off $800 and change off the price. I bought it end of the month and it came off the trailer. Total of 9 km after dealer prep and fill. Did I do well?
Bye for now, Don
Hi there and congrats on your purchase, you wont regret it. I cannot answer reference to the transmission as I have a manual, but your your interest I paid just under C$19k for my Black 06 Yaris RS three door B-package car. Im not sure how much extra it cost for the auto version, so tough to compare. Im geting approx 620km per tank doing mostly highway mileage and its now on 9000km from the 3 months Ive had it.
Congradulations! I obviously don't own a Yaris but I'm happy and envious but its all good. From what I read on other forums and from my own experience with Toyota's, I believe when the engine and transmission are cold it only goes up to 3 and not the overdrive gears (for automatic). I believe it was design that way because of emissions, that's what I read. My ECHO does the same thing, when its cold it doesn't upshift to 4th so when I let off the gas the car slows down like its in a lower gear which it is. And then when it warms up the transmission shifts, I find it annoying but I can live with it. Anyway I'm sure there is someone with more knowledge about this that can tell ya. Happy motoring!!

Yup, the automatic transmission doesn't go into overdrive until the engine reaches a certain temperature, it's the same for all Toyota automatics...
Hi D.A.L,
Congratulations!
So you manage to get 800 off the MSRP? I thought Toyota have this Access Pricing thing. Did the dealer offer you the discount themselves, or did you ask for it? Can you give me any advice on how should I talk to the car (esp Toyota) dealers in getting discounts. Last year, I was about to get the Echo HB; the best offer I got was only $300 off even when the Echo HB was on its last year.
Your recommendation will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
New here too! Also from Canada Placed order last week but now not sure if I should cancel with taht 1.8L coming.
With the prevalance of hot-hatches in the UK, it seems a necessary step for that market...
Don't hold your breath for a North American release of this one, considering the ultra-econo positioning of the car, unless some of the other sub-compacts get into the game over here..
Hey all. Thanks for the info on the cold trany shifting . It was starting to worry me, but it is a good way to warm up the componants I guess. I have had the car two weeks now and I'm pretty happy with it. I have also noticed a small harmonic vibration going through the body at about 100kph. It is about 1-2 seconds long at 1-2 second intervals. I can feel it with my left foot on the floor and very slightly through the steering wheel. This is the smallest engine and car I have ever owned so I'm not sure if it's typical or not. I am doing a fuel usage check over the next 3 or 4 tanks, to get a good average, so I'll keep you guys updated when I get the results.

One of the reasons for keeping the car in the lower gears in the first few minutes could be to warm up the catalytic converter as soon as possible so that it can function properly to make the emissions cleaner.
