Canada Yaris Sedan: Buying in US?

Hello,

I am shopping for a yaris sedan.

Here in Canada we have the AERO group in with I am interested.

When I built the car I got around prices around 22,500/23,500 $ CDN.

Today I went on the US site and saw that the equivalent is called Yaris S Sedan.

I saw that they have a nice JADE OCEAN color that here in Canada didn't have. I am jalous.

So for the fun I played with the building car engine and got price around 15,800$ US (18,140 $CDN).

Then (I am curious) I did I bit of reading...concerning importation of car in Canada.

http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/importation/impusae.htm

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/

But remain with a lot of questions with no answers.

How much for preclearance?
Hidden fees?
Transportable warranty?

My feeling is that at the end it will be more expensive to import the car otherwise everybody will go shop in the US...Is that true for all kind of car or they me have some exception?

Any answers are welcome.

Have a good night.

Hi, Mejnor, well from what I read in other forums and just some educated guesses is that it's usually not worth importing a car from Canada to the U.S. or vise versa. Just like you mentioned, the costs will exceed more than it is worth (generally speaking). You also have to deal with safety laws, emissions, go through the paper work. I can tell you this as far as certain cars. If its a car that's only produced in one country and not in the other, then it won't be worth it unless you're loaded and its a classic car or very rare car and you're a collector. It will be too much the hassle. Also factor in that the car that you import or want to import may not be "legal" as far as emissions or safety that a particular country requires. I'm just stating general stuff not the Yaris. As far as the Yaris sedan, its pretty much identical to the U.S., so its not worth it (IMHO). As far as fees concerning paper work and the car its self, that I can not tell you. Go on line and check it out. But if you feel strongly in importing a car, more power to you. Hope that helps!

The Aero Package, though on the website, is not available in Canada. Believe me I wanted one. The reason for the price difference is mostly shipping, Also, there's a charge in Canada that dealerships pay for any bumper upgrades. Canadian Bumper laws are really strict so that extra money is to safety the Aero's package. that makes the price high and not worth it. You can get a Corolla S for less.
