Canada Yaris Steering Wheel Issue

Hi,

I am wondering if anyone who has the new Yaris 06/07 have some problem with the steering wheel. If you turn right, does the steering wheel return back to straight by itself without your hands help? Or slightly right cause mine doesn't, it is always tilted at an angle, I think around 5mm off. however, turn left is fine...I hope someone will know. Even Toyota said there's no problem with it. I had 2 japanese guy to look at it but they said it's fine. You have to be sensitive with the steering wheels. You can try like...turn your steering to the right at around 10degree or less, and do the same thing with the left when you are driving normally

Hey their LiveBlue I am sorry to say I don’t quite understand your post I get it a little but not totally maybe it has to do with the road you are driving on maybe it is slanted a bit or maybe the air pressure is lower in the right tires another thing the power steering that we have on our Yaris is different from normal power steering someone else can explain that better than I can but I know we don’t have normal power steering maybe that has something to do with it you are not use to it or something if I em wrong about the power steering please let me know sorry not the best explinations oh you could of hit a pot hole maybe

yeah I know we are using electric motor and not hydrulic pump...

When I am cruising on the road, parking lots, just anywhere. I am sure the road is flats. I tilted my steering wheels to the right/left at about 10degrees or less and let my hands off the steering wheels. the right side doesn't return back to straight (around 5mm offset) while the left side does. so if I don't use my hands to adjust the steering wheel, my car will be going a slight right if I keep on cruising. I hope this is more clear. I went to toyota twice for a check up, and have them to test my car with showcase model yaris. Even they can't sense the problem with the steering wheels until I told them to feel more carefully. Then they see something is wrong with it but not sure what it is. After 2 fixes, my steering wheel is better than before but still not perfect.

I have no idea. If toyota couldn't find the problem, then it can't be fix. cause they already found the best 2 workman in their dealerships already. Both of them are japanese too. All I can do is not to let go my steering wheel for now. Until maybe another Yaris have similar issues or my steering wheel got more worse again.

If I understand correctly from your question, you may be referring to the car's caster setup. Toyota has probably set the Yaris up without a great deal of caster to help reduce rolling resistance. Less rolling resistance equals better mileage.

Just a guess... hope this helps.

EDIT: Here's a link to explain caster angle -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castor_angle

I just thought of another possibility...

Your description also mentions somewhat vague steering. This may also indicate a factory setup that favors fuel economy. By having very little or no "toe-in" (another wheel alignment measurement), rolling resistance is also reduced. With the wheels aligned almost straight ahead (and I'll bet they are) the car will roll more readily; the trade off with this is that the car won't track as well, acting the way you describe.

Again, just a guess... but you might mention this to the technicians at your dealer.

At the risk of looking like a geek, I found this TSB on your issue. Looks like this might solve the problem.

i just sent my yaris for my first free service at 1000KM at my dealers.......my steering wheel seems to be shifted to the left.......so basically when i hold the steer straight( with the toyota logo straight)......the car shift abit to the right......

so after the servicing, it was a little bit better......still not 100% straight.......so is the steer alighnment a problem with the majority here?
