I have been seeing the Yaris commercials all day here at the fire station where I work and I even looked at info on them online today.
Well just now my partner and I were sent to a wreck where the vehicle had rolled sideways and landed on the roof. Just for what it is worth I thought I would share with you all. It was a two-door 2007 Yaris and it was lying on its back when we got there. The teenage girl driving had already gotten out and was not injured aside from a good seatbelt rash and a small bruise from the airbag on her eye. The vehicle had held up surprisingly well (in my opinion) for being as small as it is - the roof had not given any on her - allowing her to get out without being crushed. I know this is in no way like the "5 Star" rating that official testing agencies may give to vehicles, but it impressed us in its durability in this wreck - and the girl's father was impressed too from what he said.
Like I say people have to stop thinking bigger is better and safer because its so far from the truth now more importantly Tracyf being a fire fighter why are you guys watching T.V. and Surfing the net at work
Gee, stuts maybe because there are no fires or car accidents. I belive that a firemans shift is more then 8 hours and because you 're not putting out fires it does not mean that you sit in a fire truck waiting for some thing to happen.
Well thanks Yartrix for that information seeing how you are from Ontario I can say this Fire fighters here get paid what 70,000 a year isent their something better they can be doing with their time instead of watching T.V. Like more training making sure the equipment is up to snuff painting the fire house the list goes on and on Yartrix

I agree with stuts on the bigger is better part. It isn't! I heard or read that SUV's overall are more dangerous or accident prone because of high center of gravity and they are more prone to roll overs. Americans still have it ingrained in their minds that small equals death. Times are changing with new materials and technology, small cars are a lot safer than they were 20 and even 10 years ago. I'll get off my soap box, but this is a testimony that small can be just as safe.

The bits of TV I got to see and the little net browsing I got to do that day was amongst: 6 emergency runs we made during the day that day and the paperwork associated with those runs, sweeping/wiping up oil spots/mopping out the 4,000 sq. ft. engine bay (the "daily station duty" for Mondays), checking every piece of medical and fire equipment and every fluid/light/siren on 6 different ambulances/firetrucks, while also doing general housekeeping duties - trash, sweeping/mopping inside, bathrooms. That job is actually my part-time job that is a bit more lax than my full-time job and that I only get paid $8.50 an hour for with no benefits. I must be away from my family for an average of 80 hours a week - up to 57 hours straight at times and I assure you I do not make 70k a year - more like 50k. But I like what I do and I am proud of my profession, having been a fireman and paramedic for the past 12 years.
This may be to your surprise, but some people actually appreciate those of us who risk diseases/injuries/lawsuits/sometimes death, get up at all hours and interrupt meals regularly for what may be a true emergency or may only be a drunk who is giving the police a hard time or beating his wife, and endure very long workdays (and nights) for about the same pay as a receptionist in an office. But to many others, we are like an insurance policy - not worth a flip until you need us. But rest assured, there are many lives that I have made a huge difference in (and with God's help saved a few) and that is thanks enough - no amount of money or bonuses can really compare with that. You can also rest assured that whatever your thoughts or feelings are toward your local firemen/paramedics, when you need them one day (and I pray you don't) they will be there giving everything they've got for you.
Agreed. Thanks to guys and gals like you for taking the risks...heck you could be surfing porn on my tax dollars for as many hours as you wanted between emergency calls and I wouldn't mind a bit for what you guys do for the rest of us.

After dealing with the crap and such that these people have to endure I would think a little R&R infront of a T.V. or P.C. would be a good thing to relax their minds and take the days activities off it. Oh and I think if they are making $70,000 a year then they need a raise because I sure as hell wouldn't want to do their job...

I really appreciate what you do..
I've yet to need the service of a fire crew, and I hope I never do.. but you people do GREAT work..
Thanks for the Yaris info. Of course, every accident is different, and I am kinda disappointed that Canadian Yaris hatchbacks aren't available with sideairbags (correct me if I'm wrong).. but it's great to hear that in the real world, someone GOT OUT OK!!
I'm glad she was fine. I hope she gets another Yaris!!
I would first like to say God bless you tracyf, and your family/friends. Don’t worry about me as God has blessed me with my health, I think if you are blessed with health in life you have nothing really to complain about. I know I will not be able to convince any of you, all of you seem to have your minds set that fire fighters are heroes and work hard. Fire Fighters make what 70,000 a year in Ontario/Canada, or close to 90,000 for the veterans of the squad. Fire fighters work something like 4 days on 3 days off something like that, so with only working four days a week or maybe just 3 and yes they stay at the fire house with their big screen T.V. and high speed internet. A lot of fire fighters with this extra time are able to have a second job, pretty nice considering they already make at least 70,000 a year. I wish I could have second job to make more money, but unfortunately I work to hard, and would not have enough energy. When I was shopping for my Yaris I was in the Toyota dealers parking lot, up pulls a big red fire truck, the good old boys get out in their fancy dancy uniforms and go look at the big old Toyota FJ Cruiser 2007. I said to my friend, maybe they are buying the FJ Cruiser for the fire house, so they can go pick up their nightly movies and popcorn. I guess what I am trying to get across here is these men and women are not heroes they don’t have a hard job although at times a hot job. Unfortunately in life the nice guys/people finish last, the real heroes of are society are the people that get paid crappy wages have two/three/four jobs just to make ends meet and never complain, they are the people that keep are society going. Fire fighters do nothing other than put out fires and arrive on at the scene. I would like to end by saying this God bless the hard working men and women of are Society who go to work give 200% everyday and get little in return, they are the real heroes. Oh and just one more thing my Ex Girlfriend was working on becoming a Fire Fighter, one of the laziest people I have ever met. Keep on Keepin on to the real heroes of are Society I know I appreciate you.
Smaller is not better in all cases there are many instances where bigger is better. For example do you want to be in a yaris and rear ended by an excursion or be in an excursion and rear ended by an excursion? Do you want to be T-boned in a yaris or an excursion?
I'd rather be in an excursion.
