USA Yaris in snow?

I live in a mountain area and have to do a ton of driving down the mountain and back to get to work. Was considering trading in the Jeep Wrangler (18MPG) for a Yaris - Can anyone give me an idea on how the Yaris will handle in snow conditions? Can you use tire chains or Spikes Spiders (preferably)? (we are required up here to use one or the other without 4WD).

“we are required up here to use one or the other without 4wd” you are kidding me right this is an actual LAW also if you are in such a mountainy area maybe the Yaris is not the best for you it maybe to small what about a FORD Ranger it gets good gas Mileage and it maybe would help you more in the winter get around up their

Nope, not kidding. When it snows, you aren't allowed up the mountain without chains unless you have 4WD. there are plenty of new beetles and other small cars up here that get around fine, but the owners do have to put on chains in the snow. I was thinking of using Spikes Spiders (allows for lower clearance) but wasn't sure if they'd work on the Yaris. I've written the company to ask. most of my driving is done down the mountain on freeways but at least three months out of the year I have to worry about snow.

Yaris will work...but if you have to put on different winter tires and chains and what not, obviously its going to effect handling and fuel economy, so you might be getting in the upper 20's low 30's for mpg but I guess anything is better than 18mpg. I'm NOT saying the Yaris is a bad car and can't handle snow, but in your situation, maybe something different...like a 4wd Matrix? But if you have your heart set on it, go for Yaris...or as stuts suggested go for a compact truck-not Ford (sorry stuts), you'd be lucky you make it a year without problems-okay I'm a little bias Good luck and hope all works out! Keep us posted!
