My BEST achievement (The official ALL-TIME RECORD FUEL MILEAGE thread)
Okay guys, I've did my best ever, and I'll try to break my current record with later attempts.
Short version of the achievement: 831km with 45L of 87 Octane (equals to an average of 5.45L/100km) <--- can someone convert that to MPG for me please? Is there a simple formula for that? For both Imperial and US miles?
Long version (details): Car - 05 Echo Hatchback LE (2dr, 5-speed manual)
Mileage - 33000km+ (last oil change at around 27000km, the suggested interval) Gasoline - 87 Octane (Pioneer brand) Capacity - 45Litres (the 43L tank-limit holds true, since I filled it all the way up to the filler-neck both before and after this record attempt, so I think there's an extra 2 litres there) Tire Pressure - 3 to 5 psi above manufacturer suggested Air Conditioning or Fan - OFF all time (it was a torture especially in really hot days), windows down some of the time, but not all the way (always closed during highway). Stock Stereo and single-disc CD/MP3 player - ON 98% of the time, blasting at volume of 30 and above.
Driving habits:
No idling the car to warm up after ignition, just start up and go.
Upshift as early as possible (between 1000-2000rpm)
No jackrabbit starts and no sudden hard braking
Coasting to a red light hoping for a green, therefore not braking and stopping much while still in Top Gear
Accelerate up to speed at a moderate rate, and speeds are kept at a constant
Highway speeds are still an average of 110km/h (max is 130km/h but very rarely)
Drafting behind cars and trucks (on the highway) during the final bar flashing (and possibly shitting my pants if my car ran out of fuel )
Drive at speed limits (or 10 above at the most)
Basically driving like a grandma
So there you go. For anyone who're tempted to comment negatively (or try to suggest there's a better way) on any of my driving habits, PLEASE save your breath.
Feel free to comment and post up YOUR OWN best fuel mileage record. The amount of details you want to include is totally up to you, and PLEASE RESPECT EACH OTHER'S POSTS!!!!
My final thoughts: From this experiment/record attempt I've realized that by driving (not slow but) sensibly I managed to cover a lot more distance then ever before, and I also feel that whenever I drove faster I don't really get to the destinations anymore faster (perhaps 2 to 3 minutes faster if let's say I go 140km/h on the highway but not constantly). Best of all the whole driving experience is much more relax (I don't recommend any of you to try this if you're really in a hurry to some place), and I get to take in some sceneries which are gorgeous and make you appreciate life. I still love to drive fast and smash on the throttle here and there, BUT THE TRUTH IS Ontario is no longer the place to drive like that anymore, not with the recent incidents and laws. Also, it's ACTUALLY HARDER to drive slowly, since it's a test on one's self-control and concentration. But in the end it was very satisfying to see such great results. I'll plan on another attempt when the time and mood are right, and when things allow me to go for such an attempt again. Rest assure, I'll be back in my grandma-mode for the next try
Oh, and last but not least, feel free to beat my record with whatever vehicle you got, whether it's a Toyota or a non-Toyota (diesels and hybrids excluded since it's already an unfair advantage, perhaps start a new thread for diesels and hybrids but this thread is strictly for petrol-engines only).
- It's actually 5.436L/100km, but for the sake of simplicity and variance/tolerance I'm just rounding it up to 5.45L.
- Weather varies, but mostly very hot days, I'd say average of 32degrees Celsius for most of those hot humid days.
- There were some extra weight in my car other than me, but I guesstimate that in total those objects wouldn't exceed the weight of another regular-sized adult (I'm a lightweight @ 125lbs avg).

Thanks for reading. Now go out and drive

831km it is 4:44am in the morning will post later but WOW WOW WOW did I say WOW already
So to my figures you got 52.4 miles to the Canadian gallon...
Not bad at all..
It's actually 831km, but, there's a Canadian gallon? Is that the same as Imperial gallon?
It'd be awesome if I did go 850km, but I think I might have gotten a tow-truck instead if I had tried to keep going
I'll definitely plan on my next attempt when temperature drops, and hopefully right after the next oil change.
But here's a question I just thought up. If I were to begin my journey from Mississauga let's say, what place is the farthest I can go and back, with one tank? Assuming I can go 840km, so the place must be 420km from Mississauga (no matter which direction, but accessible by highway preferred). Any suggestions? Any cool place to check out and have fun?
Assuming you had your windows up, you'd probably see a fair increase in economy over the long haul if you dropped down to 90 on the highway. But I'm on Vancouver Island where most of the drivers wouldn't know a real highway if it bit them in the ass, and the highest limit within 100km of Victoria is 90.
to conver to US gallons: 235.21/ L/100km or 235.21/5.45 = 43.16 mpg US.
or 51.83mpg Imp.
Either way, that's not bad! Very close to MY record tank of 840.7kms (although with only 37.366 litres). Pretty much everything you listed applied to my record tank.. minus the A/C. I did have it on on several occasions during the tank.
The driving habits you listed is exactly the thing we need to get the best fuel mileage out of ANY car. Coasting especially since I see so many morons do late braking then accelerate hard, only to brake when the next light turns red.

You're absolutely right. I'll roll my windows up as soon as my speed reach 80km/h and above, because the buffeting can get quite bad besides the increase in drag hence decrease aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.
In Ontario's highways, it's actually quite dangerous to go 90km/h. Even though I'd love to go only that fast to see improvement on fuel economy, everyone else is going at least 110km/h, and in such a situation it'd be silly to go any slower than the bare minimum (100km/h). Even I can't stand going THAT slow myself , so I think 110-130km/h is very sensible.

840.7km!!! If only I can achieve that with A/C on periodically......I'm not surprised you achieved that with the Prius, which makes me wonder the ultimate mileage you can achieve if you did everything I did with your Prius (1000km maybe??)
Regarding the morons you're talking about, I know. It's funny to see many people driving past me at higher speeds, only to have to come to a full stop at the red light. Meanwhile I'm coasting toward the light, and as soon as it turns green, I just continue gassing it lightly and passing those morons who stopped, while not having to brake much at all It not only saves gas, but also strain on engine, transmission, brakes, and my feet

That's fair enough, the last time I was in Ontario was about 8 years ago, so I don't really know about the highways there. Frankly I wish it was more like that here, the highways are painfully slow.
We got about 820km out of the last tank in our mk1 Prius before we filled it up (the last bar was flashing but the add fuel message hadn't come up), and that was running the a/c, but not often.
