Well it's been 9 months since we bought the wifes Echo and we have 59,000km's on it and so far the only concern is that A/C isn't keeping up in the heat so our local Toyota dealer has it and is fixing the only problem we have had with it. We are shooting for 500,000km's on her little car over the next five years and I'm sure we will get them with out to many problems. The only upgrades that we have done is the K&N filter and Eagle Alloy wheels.
I will keep you all posted as we climb in milage and any problems that might occur..

IMHO If you want to get to 500,000 ditch the K&N and stick with Paper filters.
True they don't flow as much air but the 1 hp difference it makes does not make up for the large amount of dust that gets through gauze type filters.
I build off road and street engines and have seen a lot of dirty intakes, valve and cylinder/piston damage over the years from people running K&N, even new out of the box.
Ever wonder why you NEVE see a cotton gauze type filter on any NEW car or off road bike, ATV or anything.. it's either foam or paper. the two best for filtering dust and dirt.
I challange eveyone I know using K&N filters to run a clean white cotton rag through their intake tubing, MAFS, TB...99% of them end up with a dirty rag.
Don't forget the oil on K&N filters will also dirty and damage the delicate MAFS sensors and over time performance will drop.

I agree with 07WYarisRS. If the car isn't going to accumilate a lot of mileage and you're religeous with the oil changes, the K&N probably will not be harmfull to the engine, but if you're shooting for 1/2 million KM, I'd ditch the K&N. You're going to want to keep the oil inside the engine as clean as can be.
My 2001 Echo is going on 240,000 Km. Its gone coast to coast several times.
The little devil has plenty of A/C for blistering Texas summers so I am sure your dealer can help you.
Repairs to date are 1 leaky shock absorber.
The two outside rear door handles should also be replaced as the handle spring has broken.
