Australia Too Far for new engine?

Hi all. My gal and I will be picking up a new 06 1.5l yaris from a Sydney dealership and with essentially prob only 30km on the clock, and driving it down to Melbourne on a freeway. Its about 900 km of driving.
My question to all you yaris owners and knowledgeable people is , is it ok to do this?
I.e.- sustained time at near constant RPM apart from the odd hill. Will it do any damage to the car? What is the best way to run in an engine? If we vary the speeds (thus RPM) every hour or so will this help?

When you break in a new engine it is not recommended that you keep the engine load constant for longer periods, just as you should not overheat it nor accelerate hard.

You will need to vary the speed a lot more often than every hour. You must find a way to vary the speed while at the same time not going over 4000RPM. Freeways are not ideal for breaking in new engines, but you should do fine as long as there are no steep hills which will make the load too high.

To break in an engine is about changing the structure of the cylinder walls so that you will get the ideal lubrication in the future. You can google for the more technical explanation.
Fortunately a new modern engine is very lenient about breaking in, and the 1.5 is not a performance oriented engine (hence the F in the engine code 1NZ-FE) so there is not much you can do wrong.

BTW. Congratulations with your new Yaris

I'd Avoid the highway and keep the rpm under 3000rpm and try to stay out of the top gear as much as possible. So, a scenic drive might be in order. Perhaps even an over night stay.

In my case, I put on 2000km on my Yaris over the long weekend (3 days)... With a lot of highway and very little city driving. Also redlined it several times at full throttle, spent some time at over 4000 and most of the mileage was on the highway. So, you can saftely say that my car didn't get a good brake-in. My gas mileage has been consitantly at around 6.6 L/100km.

It will be just fine

I just recommend you constantly vary the RPMS and speeds during the trip

Speed up then slow down speed up and slow down.
