Problem with 06 Yaris Hatch

Hey Everyone.

I have a little irritation with my 2006 Yaris hatch (manual) and I am hoping that someone on here can advise me.

When I push my clutch pedal to change from 4th gear to 5th gear the revs don't automatically come down. The same happens if you put your clutch in while you're in 5th gear. The revs just seem to hang at the same place that they were regardless of the clutch being in or the engine being in neutral. I find that in general the revs just seem to like hanging even in some of the lower gears (like 2nd).

I spoke to the dealer when I took it for a service and they told me that this is normal. I can't imagine why Toyota would intentionally do this, and I am trying to research the problem so that I can challenge them on this if it's not the case.

Any input will be appreciated.

My impression is that it's an effect of drive-by-wire (electronic throttle).

Does it happen all the time? Or does it happen only when you drive in 4th gear at a constant speed for a while?
I have '03 Corolla and when I drive at a constant speed for a several minutes in 5th gear, then RPM stays for 2-3 seconds even when I put the gear in neutral.
I've read in some place that it is done for fuel economy...
I don't know how it is though...
But I've never had it happened on any other gear than 5th.

Some cars are just like that. Hell even the new Civic Si, much to the confusion of prettymuch everyone, does it. I suppose lightening the flywheel might help, but even if it did it wouldn't be worth the effort involved.

this might sound stupid, but it happened to me: is your floor mat catching the throttle in any way?

Thank you all for your responses.

Mukioh, I find that it happens in 4th or 5th. Mostly after revving beyond 3000RPM. The most common scenario is that I will accelerate in 4th gear then change to 5th and the revs will just hang, and when I let the clutch out once I've selected 5th gear, it will jolt the car a bit because of the rev mismatch.

Emi323i, I have made sure that the pedal isn't being pushed down by the floor mat or anything else. I am even more certain of this since it only happens in 4th and 5th gear. If I rev to 4000RPM in 4th gear and push in my clutch, the revs will stay at exactly the same place. It never revs over or under the value that it was at when I pushed in my clutch. After coasting in neutral for a while the revs will eventually return to normal.

It doesnt seem like a dangerous problem (provided it doesnt get worse) but it's very annoying and I think that it's bad for the clutch since everything I change from 4th the 5th gear I have no choice but to use the clutch to bring the revs down to suit 5th gear.

I mentioned this to my dealer when it went in for its first service and they said that it was normal, but I can't see why Toyota would want to implement somthing like this since I have never once found it useful and only ever found it to be a irritation to say the least.

You do have a choice, you can shift slowly and allow the revs to drop.

How long does it hang at the RPM of 4th gear when changing to 5th?
If it's 1 second, then it sounds normal.
But if it's like 3 seconds, then it sounds abnormal.

Mukioh,

It hangs there for as long as 15 seconds.

I think it's time to call the dealer and make that appointment...
